Unravel cause of death of corps member, NYSC tells Emir of Ilorin
THE National Youth Service Corps has called on the security agencies and the Emir of Ilorin to unravel the cause of the death of one of its corps members in Ilorin, Kwara State capital.
Miss Idowu Yetunde Shukurat, a 2014 Batch 'B' member from Ogun State, was last seen on Saturday, 23 May, 2015 when she informed her colleagues that she was going to Shoprite located at Fate Road in Ilorin for shopping.
A source from the scheme told Vanguard that Yetunde's lifeless body was later found on Sunday in GRA area of Ilorin with her head butchered. Reacting to this, the Director General of NYSC, Brig-Gen. Johnson Olawumi strongly condemned the killing, insisting that the scheme would not take lightly any form of attack on its corps members.
In a statement signed yesterday in Abuja by NYSC Director of Press and Public Relation, Mrs. Abosede Aderibigbe, the DG said they had visited the state police command, the Department of State Security as well as Emir of Ilorin to bring the perpetrators to book and prevent a re-occurrence.
"The visit is to among other things, register our pains and displeasure over the death of corps member, Idowu Yetunde, to implore the security agents in the State and the Traditional Rulers to unravel the circumstance that led to the death of the corps member and subsequently bring the culprits to justice.
"The National Youth Service Corps will not continue to tolerate the abuse, harassment, intimidation and cold-blooded killing of corps members that are deployed to serve their fatherland during the service year.
"The management wishes to stress that it is the corporate responsibility of all Nigerians to ensure that corps members deployed to all parts of the country for the one-year mandatory service are accorded all assistance regarding their security and well-being in any part of the country where they are posted to serve . Every effort should be made to protect them.
"Having visited the State Security Service command, the Commissioner of Police and the Emir of Ilorin, the management of NYSC is highly confident that all hands will be on deck to ensure that the culprits of this heinous crime are brought to book.
"We use this opportunity to deeply express our heartfelt sympathy to the immediate family and relatives of the deceased corps member.
2We equally console all the corps members serving in Kwara State and indeed the entire nation for the great loss of one of their colleagues. It is our fervent prayer that this unpleasant development will not reoccur."
