Scores protest in Ilorin against release of hoodlums, threats
Scores of protesters marched around some streets of Ilorin, the Kwara State capital, on Monday against the reported release of some hoodlums, who had allegedly unleashed mayhem on Ilorin residents a few weeks ago.
They also marched to the palace of the Emir of Ilorin, Alhaji Ibrahim Zulu-Gambari.
The protesters included traders in Oja Oba and some youths.
They carried placards with different inscriptions, alleging threat to peace by the released hoodlums and calling on the appropriate authorities to intervene to avoid a breach to public peace and safety of their lives.
They also alleged that the area boys had threatened to deal with them and resume their nefarious activities.
The traders expressed regrets that the development was worrisome, considering that they had heaved a sigh of relief when the arsonists were arrested.
One of the protesters, who identified herself simply as Jumoke, said the development was sad and called on the royal father and the government to intervene.
She said, "We got information from some of the Area boys that they are now back and they would resume their operation; that is why we stage this peaceful protest."
Zulu-Gambari urged the protesters to be calm and patient and assured them that he would convey their grievances to the appropriate quarters.
State Police Public Relations Officer, Mr. Ajayi Okesanmi, confirmed the protest.
He stated that the police did not release the suspects, adding that the suspects had been arraigned but were granted bail by the court.
