Women protest over attack on Mrs Buhari's convoy in Kwara

Date: 2015-03-19

The controversy over the attack on wife of All Progressives Congress (APC) presidential candidate, Mrs. Aishatu Buhari during her visit to Kwara State on Monday took a new twist on Wednesday when scores of APC women protested in Ilorin, the state capital.

The protesters led by the APC women leader, Hajia Saratu Adebayo condemned the attack and others witnessed recently in the state which the party blamed on the opposition.

Mrs. Buhari's convoy suffered minor attack on her way from a visit to the Emir's palace on Monday.

ommissioner of Police, Mr. Salihu Garuba told our correspondent that only one vehicle in the convoy had its rear mirror smashed, saying that the attack was carried out by hoodlums demanding for money.

The APC claimed 11 vehicles were destroyed and that the attack was carried out by the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP); the allegation the PDP denied.

However, the women marched from the party secretariat to the police headquarters.

The women leader stated that the state was generally known for peace, adding that the current orgy of violence was "saddening and barbaric". She said the protest was aimed at putting an end to it.

She said, "The Kwara All Progressives Congress (APC) women are saying no against violence in the state. We have been practicing politics for decades in the state and we have not experienced the kind of violence we are now experiencing.

"One of our ladies, whose father is a chieftain of APC in Agbamu, Ajase Ward 2 in Irepodun local government area, was allegedly hit by a stray bullet from the gun fired sporadically by suspected thugs of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

"The same thing happened on Monday when the wife of the APC presidential candidate, Mrs. Aishat Buhari was here to educate the voters. We believe the perpetrators of all these barbaric acts are the opposition party members in the state. We are telling them to stop violence against us; they should go out there to sell their manifestos. Violence does not secure votes".
