Again, Kwara Students Seek Evacuation From Maiduguri

Date: 2014-09-27

Kwara State students of the University of Maiduguri have called on the state government to evacuate them, following what they called increased attacks in towns and villages of Borno State.

The students under the aegis of National Association of Kwara State Students (NAKSS), University of Maiduguri chapter, made the request in a letter addressed to the Commissioner for Education, Alhaji Saka Onimago.

The letter, which was signed by president of the association, Isiaka Omonwami, expressed hope that the members numbering 322 will be evacuated by Sunday, September 28.

It would be recalled that the state government in March this year sent a delegation to the school to evacuate the students on their request.

The latest letter read: "The above named association urgently solicit the evacuation of its members due to security challenges occasioned by insurgency. Many villages and towns located a few kilometres away from the school were recently attacked and scores of people killed. Sir, the entire members of this association will be grateful if this request can be promptly granted".

When contacted, the Commissioner for Tertiary Education, Alhaji Abdulwahab Opakunle, said he was not aware of the letter.

He also decried the attitude of the students who he noted disowned a team which visited the school in March to evacuate them.
