Confusion as Kwara postpones schools' resumption indefinitely
There is confusion in Kwara State over resumption date by public and private schools in the state.
The State had earlier directed schools to resume tomorrow, Monday, September 22, 2014 in compliance with the Federal Government's directive.
The directive came from the State Commissioner for Education and Human Capital Development, Alhaji Saka Onimago in a statement signed by the Ministry's spokesman, Alhaji Fatai Dan Kazeem.
However, the state reversed its decision on Friday, postponing the resumption of all primary (basic) and secondary schools indefinitely.
The postponement was contained in a statement from the office of the Commissioner, according to an announcement aired on the state radio.
It affects both public and private schools, the statement said while the commissioner was quoted as saying a new resumption date would be announced soon.
The postponement was coming immediately after the state chapter of the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT) issued a statement that teachers in the state would not resume on September 22 as directed by the government.
The union said its members would only resume when all provisions to prevent Ebola Virus Disease (EVD) were made by government.
The union called on all stakeholders in the education sector to be proactive in tackling the Ebola disease, appealing to government at all levels to use qualified health personnel to train teachers to forestall the outbreak of EVD.
