Delegate Tasks National Assembly On Recommendations
A delegate to the on-going National Conference, Mallam Ishaq Kawu at the weekend appealed to the National Assembly to ensure that all the issues and recommendations of the conference are passed into law by the lawmakers so as to add value to the socio-economic and political development of the country.
Mallam Kawu, a seasoned broadcaster, made the appeal in Ilorin, the Kwara State capital at the weekend, while speaking with journalists.
The delegate, who is a member of the Committee on Political Parties and Election Matters, said all the issues raised at the conference would be re-examined by the lawmakers and expressed optimism that the National Assembly members would do justice to their recommendations.
According to him, "the four hundred and ninety-two delegates at the conference were brought from different backgrounds, which cut across ethnic, religion, regional and professional organisations, including women, youth, civil society, the traditional institution and the trade union movement. They have had the opportunities to ventilate over the various problems and proffer solutions to them".
Mallam Kawu identified areas like politics, religion, policy and governance, issues of political parties and electoral matters as well as insecurity as major challenges confronting the country.
He said that, the conference had recommended among others, that government should hands off sponsorship of pilgrimages and the National Human Rights Commission to open up a possibility of resolve issues of religion and make people to respect the faith of other Nigerians. The delegate further stated that the conference unanimously agreed that the Nigerian people deserve State Police as a means of curbing insecurity and insurgency in the country.
On the 2015 general elections, Mallam Kawu lamented that the Nigerian political elite are deficient and more concerned about their own comfort as against that of the masses, stressing that they have not been able to understand the historical role to play in assisting the development of the country as the level of poverty and insecurity continued to increase.
He said that, "the political elite are not too serious about solving the country's problems, but are rather more consumed in the search for power, which they see as an avenue to become rich and thereby oppress the less privileged."
