Flooding - Ahmed Urges Environmental Compliance
Kwara State Governor, Alhaji Abdulfatah Ahmed has attributed flooding resulting from rainfall to non-compliance with environmental laws and activities.
He said many Nigerians are in the habit of blocking the right of way of water thereby exposing themselves to danger as water would definitely find its way if the way provided for it is impassable.
Speaking on the recent flooding which occurred in Ilorin and claimed four lives, the governor explained that the government had taken concrete steps to prevent recurrence of the disaster.
He said the flood control task force put in place by government would ensure the removal of buildings and structures erected near canals and waterways.
"As it is today, we have set up the committee which has the responsibility to go across all the nooks and corners of the state where drainages have been blocked either as a result of disposal of waste or structures and then we remove all these to ensure that water flows freely and not cause havoc to people", he stated.
Ahmed noted that most of the roads constructed by government were supported with concrete drainages but people began to block the drainages and prevented free flow of water.
He said, "The flooding is as a result of global climatic change which has resorted in the increase in the levels of rain that are recorded all over the world. Kwara state and indeed Ilorin is not an exception.
"But we must begin to check those things that we had put in place in the past to ensure proper drainage system. You will recall that most of the road constructions we have carried out, we have always ensured that they are supported with right concrete drainages. In other words, they are designed to ensure that water flows very freely".
