Kwara berates NLC chief for Sallah death comment

Date: 2013-10-25

The Kwara State Government yesterday criticised the Vice President of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Comrade Issa Aremu, for his alleged comment on the death of some Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) supporters when they were collecting Sallah gifts at the home of the Sarakis during the last Eid-el-Kabir.

In a statement by the Special Adviser on Labour Matters to the Governor, Comrade Bisi Fakayode, the government decried what he called an "expression of personal hatred” by the labour leader.

The statement reads: "The attention of Kwara State Government has been drawn to the comment of the Vice President of the Nigeria Labour Congress, Comrade Issa Aremu with reference to the recent unfortunate death of some PDP members in the state.

"While government appreciates genuine concerns of well meaning Nigerians, it takes exception to unguided and reckless and unsubstantiated insinuation by those who were suppose to be opinion leaders. While government respect the right of Issa Aremu, and indeed other stakeholders to freedom of expression, it expects them to make such comments in the larger interest of the people and not mere expression of personal hatred.

"Aremu acted ignorant and uninformed by not recognising efforts of the present administration in both employment generation and promotion of entrepreneurship in the state. It is a matter of fact that no nation of the world generates hundred percent employments, Kwara State in its effort to share prosperity and constrained by limited resources, has generated more than 25000 direct and indirect employment in the state.

"In his ridiculous effort to deride and attack government and individual in the state, Aremu has inadvertently criminalise God ordained arms giving which serves as redistribution of wealth within the society.

"It is worthy of note that Comrade Aremu, who only recently publicly recognised the state governor, Dr Abdulfatah Ahmed, as the best labour friendly governor can descend so abysmally low by alleging that the same government engages in financial mismanagement. Government challenge our comrade if he has any evidence that public fund is being used for charity and gifts to substantiate such without further delay. "
