Ahmed to students: No hiding place for secret cult members
Governor Abdulfatah Ahmed of Kwara State read a fresh riot act to students involved in cultism.
Speaking at the opening of the 2013 Conference of the Council of Heads of Polytechnics and Colleges of Technology (COHEADS) in Ilorin, Ahmed expressed worry over cultism tertiary institutions' campuses.
The governor said: "The will no longer be a hiding place for anyone involved in cultism in tertiary institutions in the state. "I swear, if we catch you, I swear by heaven, we will deal with you decisively. There is no hiding place, except you act alone.
If you are two, we will catch you. So, I urge you to be responsible because the country needs you "We have zero tolerance to cultism here. It does not pay anyone because it brings nothing, but sadness.
It is an escapist means to meet up with society. "Only those who are mentally weak involve in cultism. I was a student here, so we have seen it all. So, don't allow anyone to lure you into it. We thank God some of them have renounced the act."
He said the dream of making Nigeria a better place could be attainable by students and other stakeholders, advising the youth to be focused, responsible and desist from cultism. Ahmed urged members of COHEADS to focus on finding solutions to the critical problems of middle level manpower deficit confronting the nation, especially as it affects the nation's education system.
The governor said: "Today, our labour markets are sadly saturated with unemployable graduates, youths who cannot clearly express themselves, not to talk of possessing the required skills for selfemployment.
"As Heads of Polytechnics and Colleges of Technology, who determine the direction of our technological development, there is the need for you to refocus attention on quality education and business skills in order to prepare our youths for successful entrepreneurship on graduation."
He, however, said that his administration had created the Ministry of Education and Human Capital Development to oversee the development of vocational education.
Welcoming the COHEADS members, Rector of Kwara Polytechnic, Mr. Mashud Elelu, said his four year old administration had attuned itself to the demands of the school's community, the host communities and given learning a new phase.
