Date: 2013-07-04

Communities in Kwara State and their leaders have been charged to be alive to educational responsibilities in their various areas as part of measures to complement government efforts in the area of educational development.

Speaking with executive members of the Corespondents' Chapel of Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) Kwara State in Ilorin, during a courtesy call to his office, the chairman of the State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB), Alhaji Lanre Daibu, said government alone cannot shoulder all educational responsibilities in the state.

Alhaji Daibu, who said the state government has established the school-based management committees in various communities in the state to ensure that communities and their leaders were involved in the management of primary schools located in their various communities, added that the committee programme would soon be extended to junior secondary schools in the state.

SUBEB boss also said that over N2 billion had been spent on the construction of 400 classrooms, renovation of dilapidated ones and fabrication of 4,000 furniture in the last two years.

He said that the gesture cut across the three senatorial districts of the state.

"Kwara SUBEB, in the last two years have built 400 new classrooms, renovated dilapidated ones and fabricated over 4, 000 furniture in public schools across the three senatorial districts of the state,"  he said.

Daibu said that the students' enrolment in public schools has improved, attributing the success to the support and commitment of the state government to revamp education sector.

He expressed delight at the increase in the number of female enrollment in schools, which, he said would reduce level of illiteracy in the state.

He assured that government would not renege in the provision of welfare packages to about 26,000 teaching and non- teaching staff in the state to ensure optimal productivity.
