Omu-Aran Banks Robbery: CP Assures Security of Lives, Properties
Following the attack on three banks in Omu-Aran town in Irepodun Local Government Area of Kwara State, which left three people dead including a vigilante man, the state Commissioner of Police, Mr. Agboola Oshodi Glover, has re-assured the people of Kwara State of adequate security of their lives and properties.
The CP, who paid an assessment visit to the community, gave the assurance at the palace of Olomu of Omu-Aran, Oba Charles O. Ibitoye, where he solicited the cooperation and support of the community to enable the police apprehend the robbers.
A gang of robbers numbering about 20 and armed with sophisticated weapons had on Tuesday evening invaded three banks located on Aperan Way in Omu-Aran town, killing two bank officials and a vigilante man, while four police officers, including the Area Commander sustained serious injuries.
It was gathered that the armed robbers used grenades and dynamites to break the doors and vaults of the banks and escaped with an unspecified amount of money.
When the state police command headquarters, Ahmadu Bello Way, Ilorin, was contacted, their Public Relations Officer (PPRO), DSP Olufemi Fabode confirmed the incident, saying no arrest had been made.
According to the PPRO, on May 14 some suspected hoodlums attacked First, Union and Eco Banks at Omu-Aran town and made away with undisclosed amount of money.
He stated further that when the police in Omu-Aran engagedthe robbers in a gun battle, the robbers threw explosive on the mobile patrol vehicle.
Fabode added that the Commissioner of Police promptly mobilised more mobile men and Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS) from Ilorin to Omu-Aran where they engaged the bandits in a gun duel, a result of which one AK47 riffle with 14 rounds of ammunitions, two unexploded explosive devices were recovered.
The police image maker assured the public that the state command is on top of the situation, as a team of Special Anti-Robbery Squad has been put in place to investigate the matter and apprehend the suspected robbers.
He, however, extended the CP condoles message to the families and organisations of those who lost their lives to the incident.
