Kwara lawmakers halt work at Senator's hotel

Date: 2012-03-12

Members of the Kwara State House of Assembly have ordered the stoppage of work at a Car park being constructed for an hotel owned by the Chairman of Senate Committee on the Federal Capital, Senator Smart Adeyemi.
The lawmakers said the park at the Royal Shekina Suites along Offa Garage road, should not be constructed until the outcome of their investigation on the project.

Speaker of the House, Alhaji Rasaq Atunwa gave the order following the raising of  a matter of urgent public importance by Hon. Abdulganiyu Abdulkareem  to explain how the management of Royal Shekina Suite contravened the resolution of the House by refusing  to remove a center wall that is disturbing free flow of water along Atikeke community.

The House also directed the State Commissioner for Works and Transport, Director of Civil Engineering, Ministry of Works, supervising Engineer and officials of Town Planning and Development Authority to appear before the House on Wednesday, March 14, 2012 to explain their involvement in the contravention of the House's earlier resolution ordering the stoppage of the project.

Abdukareem, who is the Chairman of the House Committee on Energy, Works and Transport explained that the House had passed a resolution directing the management of Royal Shekina to stop the project since October last year as a result of letters of complaint to the House by the Atikeke Community.

He explained further that he had calmed the nerves of the placard carrying protesters from the community who had come to lodge their complaints.

Other members of the House including Ebun Owolabi, Nimota Ibrahim, Yusuf Saad Tanke, Oyekunle Fagbemi and the Majority Leader, Dr Abraham Ashaolu condemned the action of the management of Royal Shekina on the matter.

Leader of the protesting Atikeke community, Sir Abidoye James Olawepo had argued that the construction which he alleged was illegal, poses threat to their properties and existence.

Meanwhile, in another resolution, the lawmakers have also called on  Governor Abdulfatah Ahmed to direct the State Ministry of energy to ensure that quality transformers are used for all electrification jobs in the State and also replace poor service wires, conductors and other accessories supplying power to Budo Egba community.
