Kwara Now New Face of Governance, Says NGE President
The President of the Nigeria Guild of Editors (NGE), Mr. Femi Adesina, has described the current spate of development in Kwara State as the new face of governance in Nigeria.
Adesina disclosed this in Ilorin, at the weekend, when he led the members of the NGE to the Government House, Ilorin on courtesy call on Governor Abdulfatah Ahmed, in his office.
The president, who commended Ahmed on the achievements recorded so far in health, agriculture and other sectors, said: “Kwara qualifies to be the centre for medical tourism in sub-Saharan Africa.”
He said the centre needed to be marketed so that the world would know more about it.
Earlier, Ahmed had informed the media chiefs that his administration recognised that development required strategic planning and optimal utilisation of available resources in line with global best practices which, according to him, had contributed to the modest achievements in critical sectors like education, health, water, agriculture, small and medium enterprises development through loan facilities.
The governor counselled that governance in Nigeria must “be seen beyond politicking, but as a process where all hands have to be on deck as everybody has a role to play.”
He stressed that those in leadership positions must always bear in mind that being in government was by choice as nobody was coerced in to it.
According to him, “governments have a responsibility of appropriating public resources in such manners that are beneficiary to the people while the mass media serve as the link between the government and the people.”
Stressing the need for regular interface between government and the media, Ahmed noted that journalists in the country, like politicians, should always put the interest of the people above commercial and other extraneous interests.
He said the state Advanced Diagnostic Centre was conceptualised and completed to transform the state into a hub in the healthcare delivery sector in the West African sub region.
