Court Orders 11 Beggars to Pay N1,000 Fine Each

Date: 2013-04-18

The 11 people were convicted of street begging.

An Ilorin Magistrates’ Court on Wednesday imposed a N1,000 fine on each of the 11 beggars arraigned before it for street begging.

The beggars were convicted on a one-count charge of street begging which the prosecution said contravened Section 4 of the Kwara State Law, 2006.

According to the charge sheet, the convicts were arrested while wandering and begging for alms on an Ilorin street.

The accused persons pleaded guilty to the charge against them.

The prosecutor, Funsho Zacheous, applied for summary trial of the beggars since they pleaded guilty to the charge against them.

Magistrate Nathaniel Ajide, in his judgement, convicted the beggars as charged and ordered them to pay the N1,000 fine without the option of a jail term.
