Kwara NLC Pushes to Extend Federal N70,000 Transport Relief to State Public Servants
The Kwara State Council of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has initiated advocacy efforts aimed at extending the federal government's newly approved six-month transport allowance of N70,000 to all state public servants to cushion the impact of prevailing economic conditions.
The State NLC Chairman, Comrade Muritala Olayinka, disclosed the ongoing engagements during a telephone interview on Tuesday in Ilorin, the state capital.
To mitigate household financial pressures during the interim, Comrade Olayinka advised public sector employees across the state to maintain strict fiscal discipline and operate within their current financial means while awaiting the disbursement of the relief package.
Turning to broader labor matters, the state chairman revealed that the national leadership of the NLC has taken steps that prompted the federal government to set up a high-level committee to negotiate a revised national minimum wage.
Olayinka expressed confidence in the ongoing minimum wage deliberations, stressing that organized labor is committed to securing a favorable upward review of worker compensation nationwide.
The state NLC leader who also serves as the National Deputy Vice-President for the Medical and Health Workers Union of Nigeria (North-Central Zone) reaffirmed the council's commitment to advancing the welfare and rights of civil servants.
He called on workers across Kwara State to maintain composure and preserve industrial peace as wage and allowance negotiations continue at both the state and national levels.
However, Olayinka cautioned that the leadership of the labor movement would not hesitate to initiate collective industrial action should government authorities fail to implement the promised economic relief measures, stating that public servants are facing severe economic pressures.
