Kwara Government Advises Residents on Preventive Measures Against Extreme Heat and Dehydration
The Kwara State Government has advised residents to consume sufficient water, avoid prolonged exposure to direct sunlight, and scale down strenuous outdoor activities following rising temperatures and associated health risks across the state.
The Executive Secretary of the Kwara State Hospitals Management Board (KW-HMB), Dr Abdulraheem Malik, provided the health guidance on Sunday while addressing inquiries regarding proactive measures undertaken by the state to mitigate heat-related health hazards.
Dr Malik stated that the board is fortifying health service delivery while driving preventive awareness to assist residents in coping with high temperatures, thereby reducing incidences of dehydration, heat exhaustion, and heatstroke.
He advised members of the public to wear light, breathable clothing, avoid outdoor engagements during peak heat hours, and remain within shaded or well-ventilated spaces to minimize thermal exposure.
The Executive Secretary urged residents to remain vigilant for early indicators of heat-induced medical conditions, noting that dehydration often presents through intense thirst, dry mouth, dark urine, and dizziness.
"Heat exhaustion may cause heavy sweating, headaches, muscle cramps, nausea and weakness, while confusion, seizures, collapse or loss of consciousness may indicate heatstroke, which requires immediate emergency medical attention," Dr Malik stated.
He emphasized the necessity of seeking immediate medical evaluation upon noticing symptoms, warning that delayed medical intervention could lead to severe health complications.
Furthermore, he identified infants, the elderly, pregnant women, outdoor laborers, and individuals with pre-existing medical conditions as high-risk demographics during extreme weather conditions.
"Families and caregivers should ensure that these individuals have access to drinking water and cooler, well-ventilated environments," he added.
The board also advocated for inter-agency collaboration among local government authorities, relevant state bodies, and community leaders to expand access to clean drinking water and shaded public spaces within vulnerable communities.
Dr Malik reaffirmed that the board's primary objective remains bolstering state hospital preparedness while educating the populace on preventive measures and prompt clinical intervention during periods of intense heat.
