KSHMB Meets Stakeholders In Offa To Tackle Doctor Brain Drain And Staffing Gaps
The Kwara State Hospitals Management Board (KW-HMB) has designated the General Hospital, Offa, as a "special status" facility as part of a new strategic push to solve persistent manpower shortages and improve doctor retention.
During a high-level stakeholders' meeting held in Offa on Monday, the Executive Secretary of the Board, Dr. Abdulraheem Malik, met with a broad coalition of community leaders, including representatives of the Olofa of Offa, the Offa Descendants Union (ODU), the Chief Imam, and leadership from the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN).
Dr. Malik emphasized that the government cannot solve the challenge of "brain drain" alone. He advocated for a shared responsibility model where the local community helps create a "supportive, safe, and enabling environment" to make the town more attractive to medical professionals.
"Retaining medical doctors in our general hospitals requires a shared responsibility between government and the community," Malik stated. He explained that by granting the hospital a special status, it will now receive priority attention in the deployment of personnel and the allocation of critical resources.
The stakeholders unanimously agreed on several community-driven solutions, which are currently undergoing final administrative review. These strategies aim to address not only the clinical needs of the facility but also the social and professional well-being of the doctors stationed there.
The meeting concluded with an assurance from the Board that the final outcomes of these deliberations will be formally communicated to the public once the review process is complete, marking a significant step toward stabilizing healthcare delivery in the Offa and Oyun axis.
