Kwara Government Pledges Stronger Protection for Women and Children's Rights
The Kwara State Government has reaffirmed its commitment to safeguarding the rights of women and children, pledging to align state policies with international best practices. Speaking at the Annual General Meeting (AGM) of the International Federation of Women Lawyers (FIDA), Kwara State Chapter, the Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Ibrahim Sulyman, assured stakeholders of an enabling environment for all citizens to reach their full potential.
The Attorney General, represented by the Deputy Director of Civil Litigation, Mansurat Bello Alaya, emphasized that the administration of Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq is actively working to synergize with legal bodies and civil society. This collaboration aims to strengthen the enforcement of existing laws, such as the Child Rights Act and the Violence Against Persons (Prohibition) Act, both of which have been domesticated in the state.
This assurance comes at a significant time, as FIDA Nigeria is currently spearheading the 2025 campaign for the 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence, with a particular focus on ending digital violence. The government's pledge highlights a continued partnership to provide legal protection and social justice for vulnerable groups within the Ilorin metropolis and across the 16 local government areas.
While commending FIDA for its commitment to the promotion of justice, equality, and human rights, the Commissioner reiterated the Government's unwavering commitment to ensuring free access to justice in the state.
Funke Balogun, the FIDA Nigeria Chairperson, had in her remarks highlighted the organisation's commitment to protecting, promoting, and defending the rights of women and children across Nigeria.
She informed that since her assumption of office, the organisation had sustained its struggle for women's rights, with over 10 Training Workshops held on leadership skills and critical areas of FIDA's mandate.
Seye Thompson of Seye Thompson Attorneys, had in his Keynote address themed, "Reclaiming Digital Spaces: Ending Technology Facilities Gender-Based Violence", emphasised the need to focus on women facing domestic violence and to consider redress in law.
