Political Parties' Merger: Gov Ahmed Reacts . . .
Governor Abdulfatah Ahmed of Kwara State has said that there is no big deal in the merger of the four political parties which became the All Progressive Congress (APC), saying that alliances and re-alignments are bound to happen in politics.
Speaking during a monthly live interactive Radio/TV programme, 'Governor Explains,' in Ilorin on Thursday, Governor Ahmed said the formation was not driven by ideology, but people and positions.
"The merger of about four political parties to become All Progressive Congress is quite exciting. It is about politicking. Alliances and realignments are bound to happen. The system is dynamic. It is not the first time we are seeing that. It happened in the First Republic when NPC and NCNC formed a coalition. It happened in the Second Republic when NPP and NPN formed a coalition. We have seen how parties have emerged. It is a normal thing. It is not a big deal.
"PDP is not threatened in any form. The only challenge that I see in this kind of fusion is that they are not driven by ideology. They are driven by people and positions. If they are driven by ideology, then there will be reason for us in the PDP to be threatened. Tell me, what makes ACN different from ANPP? They are not different as far as I am concerned. There are no ideological differences.
"Between you and I, until when Nigeria begins to drive ideologically-based political parties, this kind of issue becomes a source of concern for us. But for now, it is just alignment and realignment. There is no cause for concern," he said.
Also, Governor Ahmed cleared the air on the purchase of additional aircraft for the state government-owned Aviation College, Ilorin, saying that the aircraft would be purchased from a Chinese Export and Import loan by the college.
He explained that it is the college and not the state government that accessed the loan to procure the aircraft, adding that the loan would be repaid in 25 years,
The governor, who said the aviation college was established to address dearth of pilots globally, added that the college needed a minimum of about 25 aircraft for effective training of pilots.
He said the plan of the state government was to invite and hand over the college to consultants from private sector afterwards, adding that the government had no business in doing business.
