VCs Welcome More Varsities, Canvass Better Infrastructure
Vice-Chancellors of Kwara State University, Malete, and Landmark University, Omu Aran, Kwara State, Profs. AbdulRasheed Na'Allah and Ola-Rotimi Ajayi respectively as well as their Al-Hikmah University counterpart, Prof. Sulyman Abdulkareem, have welcomed the establishment of additional three universities by the Federal Government.
In separate interviews on Monday, they however stated that government should move further by ensuring provision of adequate and world-class infrastructure, sufficient funding and well staffing of the federal varsities to achieve growth in the tertiary education in the country.
They added that the measures would also boost quality and the standard of education.
The Federal Government had earlier in January approved additional three federal universities in furtherance of its policy to put a federal university in every state in the country. The universities are to be located at Gashua (Yobe State); Birnin Kebbi (Kebbi State) and Gusau (Zamfara State).
The universities, according to the Minister of Education, Prof. Rukayyatu Rufa'i, will start skeletal services as soon as possible while academic work would start by 2014/2015 academic year.
The Federal Government had also in 2012 established nine universities. They are Federal University, Dutse, Jigawa State; Federal University, Ndufu-Alike, Ebonyi State; Federal University, Wukari, Taraba State; Federal University, Lafia, Nasarawa State; Federal University, Lokoja, Kogi State; Federal University, Otuoke, Bayelsa State; Federal University, Dutsin'Ma-Katsina, Katsina State; Federal University, Oye-Ekiti, Ekiti State and Federal University, Kashere, Gombe State.
Na'Allah urged the Federal Government to provide modern and sufficient infrastructure in the institutions.
According to him, Nigerian universities have not lived up to their expectation in terms of boosting national development.
"While the number of available universities to the 168 million Nigerians may be significant, the most important thing government can do is to ensure 21st century infrastructure and academic quality for all government universities.
"Our universities have failed Nigerians because we are still facing gigantic developmental problems which should have been long solved if they had collaborated with industries and government. Universities are like civil service here. This is sad," he said.
Ajayi said the current universities have been unable to provide admission opportunities for numerous qualified admission seekers, adding that the empowerment of the universities is very desirable.
