Rainstorm Renders Scores Homeless in Kwara
Residents of the Igbonna community in the Oyun Local Government Area of Kwara State have been thrown into mourning following a rainstorm that blew off the rooftops of several buildings.
City Round learnt that the rain which started at about 6:30 pm on Thursday was accompanied by a heavy wind storm which damaged several buildings, trees and electric poles in the community.
The accompanying wind storm reportedly caused a devastating effect on several buildings in the community, leaving the affected residents to count their losses.
Speaking after an on-the-spot assessment of the devastation, the National President of the Igbonna Descendants Development Union, A Salami, described the occurrence as highly devastating.
“The experience is worrisome. A few houses, if any, were left untouched by the storm which emanated from the heavy rain. Some houses were completely blown off while a good number of our people's houses were either brought down or badly damaged.
“The incident is unprecedented in history as the shock from the disaster is so great to the extent that most of our people are in confusion and will hardly find where to sleep. As we speak, the economy of the community has been grounded as the vulnerable victims of the disaster are at a loss as to what to do or where to put their heads for safety,” he said.
He however appealed to both federal and state governments to come to the aid of the people as most of them could not find shelter and food to eat.
The Chairman of the Transition Implementation Committee in Oyun, Dr Waheed Ibrahim, could not be reached on his mobile phone on Friday.
The Deputy Speaker of the Kwara State House of Assembly, Ojo Olayiwola, who represents the constituency could not also be reached at the time of filing the report.
