Four Kwara Varsity Undergraduates Arrested for Beating Co-Student to Death
The Kwara State Police Command has confirmed the arrest of four undergraduate students of the Kwara State University, Malete, for allegedly beating a fellow student to death.
It was gathered that the incident happened penultimate week in one of the private hostels outside the school.
Speaking with our correspondent on Friday, the state Police Public Officer, DSP Toun Ejire-Adeyemi, said the deceased was beaten for allegedly filming them.
She stated that a fight broke out between the students when the suspects, including two females, approached the person who filmed them, saying that one of the students was killed in the process.
Although the police spokesperson didn’t reveal the names of the students involved, she said the command has commenced an investigation into the matter.
She said, “What happened is that the incident has to do with blackmail. Two ladies were contracted to deliver something to somebody and when they went to deliver the item, they said as they were leaving the place, somebody told them that someone had recorded them.
“They then went to meet the person that committed the act and they started a fight and in the process, a student was beaten to death.
“Investigation is still ongoing. We have four suspects concerning the crime. At the conclusion of the investigation, they will be charged to court.”
Last month, operatives of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission in Ilorin Zonal Command arrested 48 students of the Kwara State University, and two residents of Malete in Moro Local Government Area over offences bordering on Internet fraud popularly referred to as “yahoo-yahoo.” (https://punchng.com/48-kwasu-students-others-arrested-for-alleged-cybercrime/)
A statement by the agency’s Head of Media and Publicity, Dele Oyewale, in Ilorin on Thursday revealed that the arrest was sequel to credible intelligence over the rising trend of “yahoo-yahoo” business in the state, especially on campuses.
He said that in a bid to free the state of corruption and other nefarious activities of ‘yahoo-yahoo boys’, the EFCC operatives swung into action and upon discrete investigations, closed up on the suspects and got them arrested in their various hideouts after days of surveillance on Wednesday, February 21, 2024.
