Police Arrest 2 in Kwara over Circulation of Defamatory Publication

Date: 2012-10-05

The Police in Kwara on Thursday said two persons were arrested for allegedly circulating defamatory leaflets aimed at causing disaffection against the state government.

Mr Femi Fabode, the command’s Public Relations Officer, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Thursday that the suspects admitted that they were the authors of the publication.

He said the suspects alleged in the publication that the state government had sold the Muslim praying ground with a view to inciting the community against the government.

Fabode, however, enjoined members of the public to disregard the said publication.

He advised the people to go about their normal businesses without fear of harassment, saying the suspects would be charged to court after investigation.

NAN recalls that the ACN and the ruling PDP had been trading words over the publication.

ACN had alleged that government ac quired and sold some land at the praying ground to private individuals.

But the Director of Publicity of the PDP, Alhaji Mas’ud Adebimpe, described ACN’s allegation as mere rumour.

"As a responsive government, the PDP administration in the state has met with leaders of Ilorin Emirate Descendants Progressive Union (IEDPU) to deny the rumour.

"Both government and the community leaders have also agreed, unequivocally, that there was never plan by the state government to sell the Yidi Praying ground to any individual or group, " Adebimpe said.

Mr Kayode Olawepo, the ACN chairman in the state, told NAN that "the party only asked the PDP-led government to confirm or deny the alleged rumour."
