Date: 2018-07-25

The Umaru Musa Yar'Adua University community, Katsina, has been thrown into mourning following the murder of one of its students, Muhammad Alaka, by suspected bandits operating along Abuja/Kaduna highway.

Sources revealed that Alaka was returning to his home town, Ilorin, Kwara State after his examinations when gunmen attacked him and other passengers along the highway.

He was reportedly shot in the head and he died on the spot. The incident occurred last Thursday, it was learnt.

Alaka, who was a student in the English and Literary Studies Department of the University, was described by his colleagues as very active in departmental affairs, and contributed to the progress recorded by the department.

The President of the Association of the Department of English and Literary Students Union, Sahaluddeen Belgore, in his reaction, said, "We are very aggrieved over the sudden demise of one of our colleagues, comrade-in-struggle, spill-over student of department of English, Shehu Kamaladdeen who was shot and killed by armed robbers on his way home along Abuja-Kaduna highway after his last paper.

". Shehu was an active member of the National Association of Students of English and Literary Studies. He held several posts in the departmental association throughout his stay. We have lost not just a member, but a useful brother, counselor and a trusted colleague.

"Without doubt, Alaka has left us without a farewell but the little time he spent with us shall forever live in our memories."

The university's spokesperson, Hajiya Fatimah Sanda, also told Northern City News on Tuesday that the institution was saddened by the development, adding that the school authority was awaiting an official correspondence from the Association of Kwara State Students in the institution on Alaka's death.

She said, "We are saddened by the news of the incident and our hearts go to his family. But we are still awaiting official correspondence from the association of Kwara State students on the campus on the incident."

Meanwhile, Alaka's remains had since been interred according to Islamic rites.
