Prison riot: Five inmates still in critical condition

Date: 2016-11-21

No fewer than five injured inmates of Oke-Kura Prison in Ilorin, the Kwara State capital, are still in critical condition from injuries sustained when the inmates rioted over poor feeding.

Our correspondent had reported that officials beat to death six inmates of the prison.

It was gathered in Ilorin on Sunday that after the riot, during which the arm squad of the prison were said to have been deployed, leading to the death and injury of some inmates, the injured ones were rushed to an undisclosed hospital.

Sources said at least five of the injured inmates were still in critical condition.

The sources said the riot by the inmates started on Tuesday at the Mandala Prison along Ilorin-Alapa Road, before spreading to the Oke-Kura Prison in the Ilorin metropolis on Wednesday.

It was further learnt that the riot at Mandala Prison was contained, while that of the Oke-Kura degenerated, leading to injuries and death of the inmates. One of the sources, who pleaded not to be named, said the incident was not the first time the condemned inmates rioted.

He said, "It has become a culture of the condemned inmates every year to riot, especially when December approaches, with the ulterior motive to execute a jail break." Meanwhile, the Comptroller-General of NPS, Mr. Ahmed Ja'afaru, was in Kwara State on Saturday.

Our correspondent gathered that his mission might not be unconnected with investigation into the crisis.

The Kwara State Comptroller, NPS, Mr. Adetoyi Akangbe, had on Saturday confirmed the visit of Ja'afaru to our correspondent on the telephone.

He had said, "I cannot talk to you now. I am with the Comptroller-General. We are doing some investigation."

The Public Relations Officer, NPS, Kwara State Command, Mr.Philip Adegbulugbe, on Sunday stated that the CG and his team were still going round, adding he would speak on the matter later. He, however, did not pick subsequent calls made to his mobile phone.
