Lecturers end three-month-old strike in Kwara

Date: 2016-08-16

Lecturers of Kwara State College of Education, Oro, have ended a three-month-old strike which paralysed academic activities at the institution.

Normal academic activities have resumed at the college after the suspension of the strike which began on May 24. Mr Musbau Abdulkareem, Head, Department Political Science, said on Monday in Ilorin that the strike was called off because of the students who had been away from classes for months.

He explained that the lecturers went on strike to protest over non payment of 10 months salaries. He said, "We have not been paid, but the students have wasted a lot of time at home which we really feel for them. That was why the lecturers decided to suspend the strike.

"We agree to the government's plea to suspend the strike, and they promise to pay us after the suspension; so we are looking forward to them to act fast". According to him, the intervention of some royal fathers also played a major role in resolving the long industrial action.

"Royal fathers such as Oloro of Oro; Oba Rafiu Ajiboye Oyelaran, Olupo of Ajaseipo; Oba Sikiru Woleola and others played a key role in resolving the crisis," Abdulkareem said. He urged the students to be prepared to work for extra hours in order to cover lost grounds owing to the strike.
