Saraki's CCT trial to resume June 7
The trial of the Senate President, Dr. Bukola Saraki, on charges of false and anticipatory asset declaration before the Code of Conduct Tribunal in Abuja, is to resume on June 7.
The Federal Government is prosecuting Saraki on 16 counts, including false and anticipatory asset declaration in his asset declaration forms which he submitted to the Code of Conduct Bureau between 2003 and 2011 when he served as Governor of Kwara State.
The trial was stalled on Wednesday following the absence of the first prosecution witness, Mr. Michael Wetkas, who was appearing as witness in the trial of the immediate past Governor of Jigawa State, Sule Lamido, before Justice Adeniyi Ademola of a Federal High Court in Abuja.
Lead prosecuting counsel, Mr. Rotimi Jacobs (SAN), had on Wednesday written to the Danladi Umar-led CCT intimating the tribunal of the development and suggested June 7, 8 and 9 dates for continuation of trial
The Head, Press and Public Relations, Ibraheem Al-hassan, in a statement on Thursday, confirmed that the tribunal had granted Jacobs’ request by fixing June 7 for the trial to resume and to continue on June 8 and 9.
Al-hassan said this confirmed that the reports in some sections of the media that the trial had been adjourned indefinitely was false.
“This got to show that the initial impression that the tribunal had adjourned indefinitely was false, as publicised yesterday (Wednesday) by some media organisations,” Al-hassan said.
