Kwara Polytechnic resuscitates Radio Poly

The Kwara State Polytechnic, Ilorin has resuscitated its Radio Polytechnic to serve as source of information to the Institution’s communities.

The Rector of the Institution, Alhaji Masud Elelu who disclosed this in an exclusive interview with VON Correspondent in Ilorin, said the radio station was shut down in 1982 and his administration decided to revamp it for the purpose of disseminating information within the campus and the host communities.

According to him, the transmission is within the campus and neighbouring communities, saying that the institution needs a sum of #50m naira to register with the National Broadcasting Commission for it to transmit beyond the polytechnic communities.

Speaking on the commencement of Higher National Diploma in Mass Communication course, Alhaji Elelu disclosed that the National Board of Technical Education (NBTE) expected polytechnics to run 70% of science courses and 30% of humanities courses, saying that this is causing delay for the commencement of HND in Mass Communication.

He added that the Institution is currently running 55 NBTE approved courses and more 5 science courses had been tabled for approval to make it 60 courses, saying that once the 5 courses are approved by the Board, the Institution would start the HND programme in Mass Communication and National Diploma in Purchasing and Supply to also increase humanities courses.

The Rector said “you know as a technical institution, we are expected to run 70% of science courses and 30% of humanities courses, we already have 55 courses and we are waiting for the approval of the NBTE to commence more 5 programmes. Once these courses are approved, it will allow us to introduce more humanities courses and HND in mass communication will be first considered and ND in Purchasing and supply. You know my administration started the Mass Communication programme 4 years ago and demand for its HND programme is high”.

The Kwara Polytechnic Rector noted that the management of the institution had focused attention on staff capacity building, pointing out that many of the institution’s staff are currently running that Masters and Ph.D programmes within and outside Nigeria.

Alhaji Elelu stated that more than 300 staff had also undergone different training, affirming the determination of the management to encourage training and retraining of its workforce to enhance teaching and learning in the institution.

Kwara Poly strengthens its security apparatus

The Kwara State Polytechnic says it has strengthened the security apparatus of the institution to forestall break down of law and orders.

The Rector of the Institution, Alhaji Masud Elelu who said this in an interview with VON correspondent in Ilorin, the Kwara State Capital, noted that different security mechanism had been put in place to check the activities of the students within and outside the campus.

Alhaji Elelu added that the institution embarked on enlarge security meeting and patrol with the host communities and review the institution’s security network and ensure proper monitoring of the students.

According to him, 182 security personnel comprising the Nigerian Police, SIB, SAS, the State Security Service, Nigeria Civil Defence Corps and Private guards manned the security of the institution every day.

He described lack of perimeter fence as one of the challenges facing the polytechnic, saying that the institution environment is big and it requires billions of naira to provide perimeter fence to safeguard lives and property.

The Rector of the Polytechnic disclosed that the institution is partnering with a new generation bank to construct large hostel in the institution as part of efforts to accommodate the students within the campus.

Alhaji Elelu also attributed lack of parental care and proper monitoring of the children on the part of parents as part of the problems facing the institution, pointing out that the parents are not playing the expected roles of monitoring their children which is causing security breaches in the institution.

He therefore called on parents to ensure proper monitoring of their children and visit them in school to examine their academic performances and know the type of peer groups they are keeping in school.

Speaking on the institution hosting of 2018 NIPOGA Games, the Rector noted that all necessary facilities had been provided especially the construction of the standard main bowl, indoor sports hall and outside sports hall equipped with state of the art equipment. He added that the Institution is looking forward to also host WAPOGA.
