Erratic power supply grounds 30.5m Ilorin Asa dam
The Kwara State Government has disclosed that its effort to ensure that residents of Ilorin, the state capital enjoy portable water supply through Asa Dam with 30.5 million gallons per day were affected by incessant erratic power supply from Ibadan Electricity Distribution Company(IBEDC).
The state has 94 water works across the state with three major centers including Asa Dam,Agba Dam and booster station . The State government had promised to ensure that no resident walk a 5000 meters before getting waters in the state with 51 water works functioning while others were undergoing rehabilitation.
The Commissioner for Water Resources, Barrister Rasak Akorede who stated this while briefing journalists during the kick-off monthly state ministerial press briefing on Tuesday.
He said that additional N500 millions has been released this year to the contractor to ensure that the contractor go back to the site to complete the water reticulation project, stressing that this was done by Governor Ahmed to ensure resident in Ilorin get portable water after huge amount spent on the project by government.
The Commissioner also disclosed that the State government has put in place Water Scheme with ten water tankers to serve people at 149 designated points in the metropolis.
While speaking on the challenges the Ministry faced,Akorede noted that if there was eight to ten hours power supply, the Asa Dam would have generated 24.5million water gallons per day at full length noted that what they are experiencing was four to five hours power supply which was not adequate for the pumping of water and supply to the general public.
He added that the industrial strike embarked upon by the Workers of the Ministry has being resolved by Governor Ahmed with approval of payment of two months salaries with other additional benefits.
Akorede said government would be satisfied if it invested N20 million or 30 millions on water sector and get N50 millions or N60 millions as returns which would be use to reinforce other departments necessary for the adequate functioning of all water works in the state.
