Much ado about 2019 By Bashir Jimoh
I have been wondering how the 2018 elections would be…and why? This is because every event that is happening today in the political circle is being linked to the 2019 elections, especially the Presidential poll.
Who will replace President Muhammadu Buhari in 2019, and that is if he decides not to run. And if he decides to, who will challenge him? An unconfirmed source quoted President Buhari to have said that he will serve for only one term. But serving beyond one term for President Buhari can only be decided by the former Army General.
One, if President Buhari performs well, he may be forced to risk his health to go further than 2019. But by who?…the masses I think. Secondly, by an unwritten arrangement, the north has another opportunity to produce the next President if President Buhari did not rule beyond 2019. And that would mean searching for a northern candidate whose credibility to be close or more than that of President Buhari.
Either we like it or not, President Buhari has something going good for him…integrity. He has staked that integrity, and should the integrity remain intact till the end of this present tenure, it will definitely carry him beyond 2019. But will President Buhari rule beyong 2019?
The Acting Chairman of the Peoples' Democratic Party, Alhaji Ali Modu Sheriff said that the party will defeat the All Progressives Congress in the 2019 Presidential poll. Whether he is serious or not depends on many variables. Part of which is, will PDP remain intact and well prepared for the 2019 elections? Or will the APC remain one before then? Time will tell.
With the emergence of Sheriff as the Acting Chairman, the crisis rocking the party has just started. Again, the APC has not up till now shown a trait of a closely knitted components. The party is not speaking with one voice, and they are not working together like one big family. That is the truth about APC. And that may create a gap for many things. Some are even of the believe that another party will emerge to challenge APC. But will APC remain one till then or must have disintegrated? Between destiny and hope.
Do you remember the famous 'I Can Be President: A Kid's-Eye View'? It was an extremely well done and well-produced documentary for children Children talk about what they think it would be like when they grow up. I can be President…there is a difference between destiny and hope. Destiny is the events that will necessarily happen to a particular person or thing in the future, while hope is a feeling of expectation and desire for a particular thing to happen.
The boy in the picture below may not even know how to read and write, because of the part of the world which destiny places him…war ravaged area where it would be difficult to even live and grow as expected talk-less of hoping for anything or becoming anything.
But as faith would have it, he got and wore a t-shirt with the inscription 'I can be President'. Despite his condition and the sorry events that surround the environment that he lives in, if it has been destined that he would be great and even be President, destiny will be fulfilled. Food for thought.
