Culture has potential to change Nigeria -Omotosho

Date: 2016-02-26

Entertainment seekers are looking forward to Rotary's forthcoming Culture Night in Abuja, what activities should we be expecting?

There is going to be a lot of activities; Drama, Poetry, of course we are not forgetting our root. There will be traditional performances and dances in the evening of the event. In the morning we just want to talk about four way tests, the re-orientation tool, then in the evening we will have the cultural event. We have invited several embassies and many of them have indicated interest to showcase their festivals. Not only that, there is going to be a fashion parade, fashion competition where we intend to pick the 10 best dressed people. In all, we are just going to have an evening of fun. No long story, of course we are going to show a few clips on our tourist attractions here in Nigeria, we want to showcase our culture to let people know the beautiful things we have in our country so, those are some of the things people should expect at the cultural. If our people are not properly cultured, the whole process will be faulty, but the moment we get our minds right then, naturally things will change. We need to go back to the root to figure out how we can begin to think differently as a people. If I change my ways and attitude others will do the same and then no one will label Nigerians as corrupt persons anymore.

How then can we use culture and of course entertainment to change the attitude of Nigerians?

Let the government key in to rotary four way test, circulate it widely like we are trying to unveil four way test on the Feb 23rd for instance there is going to be have poems, we are going to be having debate, public speaking competition, essay completion, we are going to be having drama, talk shows, TV shows, phone in programme even reality show on TV jingles, billboards, pull advert everything possible to get people know about the four way test. That is why I visited over 160 stakeholders, state governors, ministers traditional rulers preaching the four way test also communicate down within the community because the message must go on.

How would you relate it to entertainment so that more Nigerian will be able to assimilate the message?

That is exactly what we want to do; the message is for everybody, and of course when you recognise that the bulk of Nigerians are the masses, you must realize that the message must truly target them and we are not leaving any stone unturned.

What are the reasons for this 4-Way Test Code?

The 4-Way Test Is it the truth? Is it fair to all concerned? Will it build goodwill and better friendship? Will it be beneficial to all concerned? All the leaders and the followers must live by example, by asking themselves if their thoughts, utterances and actions are true, fair and of mutual benefits. And you will agree with me that, there was a global wind of change; I am not talking about political party change now and for that change to happen, I believe it must begin with us as an individual person at a time and this four way test initiatives gives us that opportunity to be able to change. So, if our thought, our word and our action will pass the four way test then, it very likely that it will be very strong and will be constructive, and will possible impact us as well so, I will be changing, you also will be changing. So the ideal of launching the four-way test is to see how government can key in to rotary four way test and use it as national agenda for change.

Rotary club is known for its community development initiatives, how have you been able to affect the life of Nigerians positively? My District covers 23 states including FCT permit me to mention far beyond FCT, because we have done a lot of things in the last seven months. We have six areas of focus in Rotary besides global polio eradication programme which is flagship project of rotary international you are aware that in the past 28 years we have been in the forefront of polio eradication. Rotary have spent over $1.5 billion globally to eradicate polio, in Nigeria alone we have spent close to N300 million naira as local Rotarians just on polio eradication.

When we started this fight 28 years ago we have 125 countries that are polio endemic. I am delight to announce that today only two countries are label polio endemic nation. Nigeria is not one of those two. However, it doesn't mean that the fight against polio has been won, no; it only means we are on the way to win the war because we have been remove from the polio endemic nation means we are working but it doesn't means we are there yet because we need three years of uninterrupted absence of polio in the system before we can thoroughly say Nigeria is polio free, we are not polio free yet but we have been remove from list of polio endemic nation. The six areas of focus are maternal and child health, disease prevention and treatment, literacy and education water and sanitation, poverty eradication and community development, peace and conflict resolution. We do project in all of these six areas on regular basis we go to IDPs camps give them house hold potentials which is unique, because a lot of them have been displaced. We give them cooking materials, clothing both new and used and most importantly we make available medical care.

Because, if you don't have healthy community, you cannot even begin to think of poverty eradication, education, in fact they will drink any water and then you are back to square one again. So, for me health is not just wealth health is the foundation of every other thing you want to do. Last month, in Ilorin we had cleft lips and pallet deformity correction surgery for over 100 children, we have over 17 volunteer all over the world US, Canada, Australia to perform the surgery free of charge for all the kids. Late last year we sent 160 Chibok children not Chibok girls. In Pyegi community near Kuje we send them back to school and we still looking within the community. Rotary clubs Gwarinpa donated boreholes, complete set of toilet to primary school in Gwarinpa here we do all of these. In the last five months in office I have commission over 300 projects ranging from complete ICT units to ordinary bills boards. There is no doubt we all understand that in every society

How would you correct the impression of ordinary Nigerian that, Rotary international club is for only the rich, not for the poor?

Let me quickly correct the early perception about Rotarians being only rich people it is not true, what we do first is to create awareness for rotary, build on that awareness to let people know it is not about how much money you truly have so Rotary is truly for everybody but you got to have the heart of service that is why we call ourselves a humanitarian organisation.
