Gov Ahmed solicits more private sector involvement in providing primary education
Gov. Abdulfatah Ahmed of Kwara has called for more private sector involvement in the provision of basic/primary education to improve the quality of education in the country.
The governor made this call when the Head, Oando Foundation, Mrs Adekanola Adegoke, paid him a courtesy visit in Ilorin on Wednesday. Ahmed also called for partnership between the State Government and Oando Foundation through infrastructure and technical assistance to the state-owned International Vocational Centre, Ajasse-Ipo.
According to him, proper funding of basic education is beyond the capacity of any tier of government; hence the need for the private sector's intervention. The governor said inadequate funding of basic education could adversely affect the quality of education of next generations of Nigerians.
"Unless we put a very strong policy in place to truly support the basic education, we will be creating some problems for the future generations. "Nigerians need to support the drive for better basic education in the country", the governor added.
Ahmed commended Oando Foundation for its intervention in basic education through its Adopt a School Initiative. The governor was of the view that such intervention would free some funds for the upgrading of other schools.
The Head, Oando Foundation, Adegoke, said the organisation, established in 2011, had adopted four schools in the state for intervention in 2016. She said the aim of adopting the schools was to promote school enrolment, pass rate, infrastructure development, water, sanitation and Information Communication Technology. (NAN)
