Road construction work begins across Kwara... Govt warns against shoddy jobs
Contractors handling various road projects across Kwara State have been mobilized back to site just as the state government charged them to justify its payment.
The government said it could not afford to waste time any longer, emphasising that it was imperative to get value for whatever was being spent at this critical period.
The state Commissioner for Works and Transport, Alhaji Aro Yahaya who monitored various projects embarked upon across the state yesterday, warned contractors against shoddy work.
He stressed the need for the contractors to work in accordance with specification, urging them not to betray their agreements with the government.
It would be recalled that the contractors had abandoned the projects since 2014 because of government's inability to mobilise them.
The state governor, Alhaji Abdulfatah Ahmed had in his several encounters with newsmen attributed the problem to the dwindling allocation from the federal government and promised to start the projects whenever the situation improved.
During the inspection of Megida/Arobadi 17kilometre road, the commissioner told the contractor to redouble his efforts in order to finish up on time. Also at Adewole/Mini campus and Agbo- Oba/Henry George extension roads, he sounded serious note of warning to contractors handling the projects and advised them not to compromise.
According to him, "We are doing all these with public fund, and it has to be judiciously managed. So, we will not tolerate any act of compromise from anyone, no matter how well placed.
At the Ojatuntun, the Special Adviser on rural roads, Alhaji Mustapha Saraki said the construction of the Ojatuntun road network was informed by government's intention to ensure free flow of vehicle inside the market.
He further said that the project was being constructed according to specification and assured that the project would be completed and handed over on scheduled.
The commissioner therefore, expressed satisfaction over the level of work done and commended the Kwara Road Maintenance Agency(KWARMA) for what he described as a good work job.
While appealing to road users to abide by road rules and regulations, he also cautioned traders in the market to jettison dumping of refuse on water ways, saying that it was a way of sabotaging government's efforts. Other places visited by the commissioner included, Egbejila, ita Alamu road projects among others.
