Kwara Assembly urges revitilisation of govt media outfits

Date: 2015-12-04

Kwara State Government has been urged to resuscitate the moribund booster stations of the State Owned Broadcasting Corporation, Radio Kwara or establish new ones in different parts of the State to ensure effective dissemination of information across the State.

This is part of the resolutions reached by the State House of Assembly following a motion raised by a member representing Ilesha/Gwanara Constituency Hon. Umar Gunu on the need to address the non reception of Radio Kwara and Kwara State Television service signals in Baruteen and some Local Government Areas of the State.

While reading the resolutions of the House, the Deputy Speaker Elder Mathew Okedare who presided over the sitting, said information dissemination was imperative in ensuring the sustenance of democracy.

The House, according to him, equally enjoined the State Government to commit the needed resources to the rehabilitation of Radio Kwara and Kwara TV to enable the two Stations continue to play their role of effective dissemination of governments programmes and activities to the people especially those at the grassroots.

The sponsor of the motion had while raising the motion said that Radio Kwara inherited by the State Government from the Federal Radio Corporation of Nigeria, FRCN in 1979 and Kwara Television were faced with the challenge of obsolete equipment, thereby making it impossible for the people of Baruteen Local Government Area and other part of the Southern axis of the state to receive reception and signal of the two stations.

He further noted that since the disappearance of booster station of Radio Kwara in Baruteen, Irepodun, Ekiti and Oke-Ero Local Government Areas had compelled the people of the affected areas to rely in Radio Parakou in the Republic of Benin and FM Stations in Ekiti State for information.

The leader of the House Hon. Hassan Oyeleke, Members representing Okuta/Yashikira and Kaiama/Kemanji/Wajibe Constituencies, Hons. Adamu Usman and Ahmed Ibn Mohammed, who were co-sponsors of the motion had praised the ingenuity of the staff of the two stations and insisted that information dissemination was vital towards ensuring proper dissemination of government's activities and effective feedback mechanism in the State.

Nigerian Pilot reports that ?the resolution was reached following the presentation of the report of the House Committee on Energy, Works and Transport on the abandoned Alera Electrification Project by its Chairman Hon. Mathew Babaoye following a Matter of General Public Importance raised by a member representing Share/Oke-Ode Constituency Hon. Akanni AbdulRahman.

The House equally urged the State Government to cash back the electrification of Egba/Sangotayo project to enable the contractor handling Alera Electrification project connect Alera Community to the national grid.

The Deputy Speaker however, directed the House Committee on Energy, Works and Transport to investigate petitions written by Sapati Ile Community in Asa Local Government Area asking the House to wade into the blockage of the only road linking it to other towns by the Nigerian Railway Corporation, thereby hampering the socio-economic activities of the people of the area. The motion was raised by Hon. Abdulrasheed Abdullahi, member representing Owode/Onire Constituency. Also to be investigated is a " Save Our Soul" petition written by Jimoh Alabi of Isale Ajanaku street Irewolede Ilorin, over the diversion of erosion which he said resulted into the collapse of his building, presented by a member representing Ilorin North West Constituency Hon. Abdulrafiu Abdulrahman.
