Pro-Saraki Senators Warn EFCC Against Political Witch-Hunting In Wife's Probe
A group of Senators loyal to the Senate President, Bukola Saraki, under the aegis of 'Like-Minds,' have warned the Economic and Financial crimes Commission against allowing itself to be used for the purpose of political with-hunting in its recent invitation to Saraki's wife over alleged corruption when her husband was governor of Kwara State.
The group of senators in a statement signed by Dino Melaye (Kogi West) on Thursday questioned the invitation of Saraki's wife, Toyin, five years after her husband left office, saying it was curious that the probe may be politically-motivated.
It said it found the invitation "very curious and hope that the invitation of Mrs Saraki is not politically motivated or linked with the on-going leadership tussle in the Senate".
The statement reads: "Though, we do not want to make any hasty conclusion, we are surprised that about five years after the Sarakis left Government House, Ilorin, the EFCC suddenly realized the need to invite the wife.
"We hope this is not part of the plot we have heard about aimed at wrestling the Senate President down with different tactics.
"We have heard some of our colleagues and their sponsors boasting about throwing all types of mud at the leadership of the Senate in the bid to force it to accept their conditions.
"The EFCC definitely should perform its lawful duties but we warn that it should not return us to the dark days when the anti-graft agency was frequently and flagrantly used as a political weapon."
The Like-Mind lawmakers noted that EFCC's invitation of the Senate President's wife at this material time created a lot of coincidences which any discerning mind would not want to ignore.
According to the senators, they would continue to watch the development closely with a view to making their position known to members of the public in due course.
The former Kwara State First Lady has accepted to honour EFCC's invitation fixed for July 28 over alleged money laundering offences.
