NLC crisis will end soon - Yasin
Deputy President of the Comrade Ayuba Wabba-led Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Comrade Alhaji Najim Yasin, yesterday said that the leadership crisis in the labour union would soon be a thing of the past. Yasin, who is National President of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW) told newsmen in Ilorin, Kwara State, that a committee had been put in place to reconcile the warring factions.
It would be recalled that the last triennial delegates' conference of the union in February was marred with crisis leading to factionalisation of the congress. Wabba emerged at the Abuja conference but the aggrieved members held a parallel conference in Lagos to elect Comrade Joe Ajaero as their president with Comrade Issa Aremu as deputy president.
However, Yasin assured the members that a reconciliatory move is was place to end the crisis. "We believe that we should all come together and speak with one voice in the general interest of all Nigerian workers", he said. He expressed hope that the reconciliation move would go a long way in ending the crisis that has polarised the labour union. He commended Nigerian workers and labour leaders in the country for their understanding and assured them that the NLC would come out stronger.
The NURTW president said the delegates' conference of the union would come up in Abuja by August this year, adding that so far he is the only candidate that had signified intention to vie for the position. The NLC Deputy President, who hails from Offa in Kwara State, also hailed the emergence of Senator Bukola Saraki as Senate president. He appealed to all aggrieved senators and other members of the All Progressives Congress (APC) to sheathe their swords and join hands with the new leadership.
