None of the Zimbabwean Farmers was found dead

Date: 2010-04-12

The attention of the Kwara State Government has been drawn to the media reports of Monday, April, 12th 2010 editions captioned "Missing Shonga white farmer found dead".

The said publications had reported the missing and subsequent death of Mr. James Alexander Gordon Harmish Chisholm, supposedly one of the white farmers in Shonga Farms in Edu Local Government Area of the State.

We wish to clarify that, the claim as reported in the media was untrue and the imagination of the authors of the publications. There was no Zimbabwean Farmer who was ever reported missing or dead, as all the thirteen (13) farmers in the service of Shonga Farms Holdings Nigeria Ltd are hale and hearty.

The deceased Mr. James Alexander Gordon Harmish Chisholm was never at any time part of the registered Zimbabwean farmers in Shonga Farms Holding Nig.

James Gordon Harmish was an expatriate that worked at a private farm owned by Nigeria Starch Mills Ltd located at Ode-Giwa, Onire District, Asa Local Government Areas of the State.

There is therefore, no iota of truth in the said reports claiming the death of one of the Zimbabwean farmers in the State. The Ministry of Agriculture and Natural Resources as the parent Ministry that oversees agricultural programmes and projects in the State, hereby debunks the entire media report.

Let it also be noted that the late expatriate worked on a private farm located in Kwara Central Senatorial District whereas the Shonga Farms is located in Kwara North Senatorial District.

The Ministry wishes to appeal to our friends in the media to always clarify and confirm issues where the need arises in order to avoid misleading the public.

Engr (Prof) Mohammed Gana Yisa
Honorable Commissioner,
Ministry of Agriculture and Natural Resources.
