A 29-year-old man, Emmanuel Igbuku, has been remanded in prison by a magistrate's court in Ilorin, Kwara State, over attempt to kill one Yetunde Apalando.

The case was transferred from 'C' Division, Ilorin to the Department of Criminal Investigation.

It was gathered that on November 10, one Kayode Apalando reported that on the same date, his wife (Yetunde Apalando) fell down in the kitchen and she was rushed to the hospital.

He alleged that when he enquired about what happened, she told him that the incident occurred shortly after she tasted from the rice she was cooking in the kitchen.

He added that the hospital confirmed that his wife had been poisoned.

The complainant further stated that he then went back home and raised an alarm. He alleged that the suspect, Emmanuel Igbuku, whose room is next to his, confessed to have added insecticide to the food.

The prosecution said: "Police investigation revealed that Emmanuel Igbuku poisoned the meal with intention to kill his neighbour.

The accused appeared before the court over attempt to commit culpable homicide, an offence contrary to Section 229 of the Penal Code.

The police prosecutor, Oderinde Abideen, urged the court to remand the accused in prison, saying the offence was capital in nature and investigation was in progress.

Magistrate Mohammed Nda-kene, in his ruling, agreed with the prosecution and ordered the remand of the accused. The matter has been adjourned to December 22.
