NBA to sue Kwara Police over assault on members
The Ilorin branch of the Nigeria Bar Association is considering filing a suit against the Kwara State command of the Nigeria Police Force over incessant onslaught on its members.
The latest in the series of alleged assaults was the last Thursday's night beating of chairman of the branch, Barrister Mobolaji Ojibara and two other members of the association by some policemen in Ilorin, the state capital.
Ojibara decried a situation where some operatives of the state command of the Police were now acting on a strange order of descending on would be lawyers in the state.
The Chairman said appropriate steps would also be taken to drag the erring policemen to court.
"The branch will file a suit in a law court to ascertain the veracity of a claim by a policeman in the 'A' Division of the state command that he had been instructed to pounce on any legal practitioner at sight," Barrister Ojibara explained.
He noted that the NBA must put a stop to a situation where citizens who should feel protected by the presence of policemen now feel threatened.
The NBA Boss said the association would join members of the public to institute a reform to end attack by some policemen on unarmed citizens.
"Some men in the police are not fit to be in the force because people should be feeling protected when policemen are around them," he stressed. Undue harassment
"On Thursday, 23rd of October 2014, some of my colleagues called me around 9:30 in the night that they were being beating and harassed by some policemen, and that they were even being arrested and taken to police station.
"Immediately I heard that my colleagues were being taken to 'A' Division police station, knowing that that particular station had its notorious for harassing and intimidating legal practitioners. Anytime a legal practitioner goes there for professional reasons in the pursuit of his professional callings, our colleague always get intimidated, harassed, embarrassed, beating up and locked up.
"By the time I got there, I met some colleagues including very senior colleague of this branch, Sir J S Bamigboye and a former chairman of the branch. And when asked of what was happening, all of them pointed me to the counter where the lawyers in question were. I met them; they were already being dispossessed of their possession in preparedness to be taken to the cell.
Ojibara urged the media to join hands with the legal profession with a view to protecting innocent citizens against undue harassment by uniform men.
