Ilorin NBA Crisis: No going back on chairman's impeachment - Sponsors -Tension mounts ahead today's meeting
The battle to impeach embattled Chairman of Ilorin Branch of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), Mobolaji Ojibara, was unabated last night as sponsors of his removal notice remained adamant, National Pilot has gathered.
The National Pilot reporter learnt that there have been palpable tensions among lawyers ahead of today's monthly General Meeting of the Branch where the impeachment saga tops the agenda.
The meeting called by the embattled chairman was predicated on the two weeks ultimatum given by the sponsors for the deliberation on the impeachment proceedings, which expires tomorrow (Tuesday).
The impeachment notice signed by 32 lawyers and addressed to the Branch Secretary, MAI Akande, was dated July 21, 2014, gave Ojibara two weeks to call for the branch's General Meeting from the day he received the notice.
The notice entitled "Impeachment Proposal Against The Chairman Mr. Mobolaji Ojibara Brought Pursuant To Article 13 (2)(a) NBA Ilorin Bye-Law," listed 8 impeachable offences against the chairman who dismissed it as baseless and insubstantial.
This medium yesterday gathered the meeting summoned by the association's Secretary, MAI Akande on the directive of the chairman will hold at the Bar Centre at the High Court premises, Ilorin, Kwara State capital by 10 am.
The impeachment notice being one of the agenda of the meeting could end up in fisticuffs if not carefully handled, insiders envisaged.
The National Pilot reporter also gathered that the meeting is likely to address separate allegations raised against the chairman by secretary.
Details of the allegations raised by Akande were sketchy as at the time of this report, but it was reliably gathered that the matter has been tabled before the Elders Forum of the branch for amicable resolutions. Ojibara confirmed to National Pilot in a telephone chat that the meeting comes up today.
Asked whether the impeachment saga was part of the agenda of the meeting, he simply responded:"Yes, it is," while attempt to ask him further question on the meeting was fiercely resisted by the chairman.
Two lawyers who are signatories to the impeachment notice, Folorunsho Ahmad Hussain and Ahmed Tafa told National Pilot yesterday there is no going back on the move.
Nothing stops it Insha Allah. It's only God that can stop it because what we stand for is justice and anything other than that, May God almighty reward everybody according to his deeds," Hussain told the reporter.
Asked whether those allegations still stand, he said: "They are not baseless. They are correct allegations. The law requires that 40 members must sign requisite to call for emergency meeting where impeachment proceedings will be deliberated. We have done that and 50 members signed the requisite. It shows people are willing but we only stop it at that."
On his part, Tafa argued that the impeachment notice could only be reversed only if the embattled chairman could defend all the allegations to a "satisfaction."
Tafa said: "There were a lot allegations raised in the impeachment notice. At the meeting, there must be defence on the part of the chairman on the allegations levelled against. His defence or explanations to our satisfaction whether we move on or not."
