'I don't want her influenced negatively'

A housewife, Alimat Sule, told an Ilorin Area Court in Kwara State that her husband, Mustapha, turned her into a prisoner by locking her inside her room.

The 32-year-old, a resident of Ipata Area, Ilorin, Kwara State capital, therefore, urged the court to dissolve her three-year-old marriage to Mustapha.

She told the court that Mustapha always wanted her indoors because he did not trust her.

"My husband has turned me to a prisoner and would lock me indoor and go with the key until he returns from work in the evening," she said.

Aminat also told the court that Mustapha would not allow her interact with their neighbours due to his strictness.

She added that her husband preferred going to the market to shop for the family's needs just to prevent her from going out.

According to her, their marriage was contracted in 2011 and was yet to produce a child.

"My lord, I want an end to this marriage. I can't continue to live as a prisoner and with a husband who doesn't trust me," she said.

Mustapha, who opposed his wife's prayer, said he was still interested in the marriage.

"I stopped my wife from having friends because I don't want her to be influenced negatively and that was why I always wanted her indoors," he said.

He pleaded for an adjournment of the case to enable him make reconciliatory moves.

"I promise to give her more freedom henceforth," he said.

The judge, Mr Yusuf Abdulkareem, adjourned the case till June 26.
