Kwara to sanction erring traders over environmental laws
The Kwara Government on Wednesday said it would arrest and prosecute any trader that flouted its order on the display of wares on road sides.
The Director of Environment at the State Ministry of Environment and Forestry, Alhaji Sikiru Olanipekun, disclosed this while featuring on a radio program in Ilorin.
He appealed to traders in Ilorin to comply with the government's rules on environmental sanitation and sensitisation campaign.
The director said that the deadline for the traders to remove their wares from road sides expired on Jan. 20.
According to him, law enforcement agents would commence implementing the order from Tuesday.
Olanipekun warned that any trader or artisan who violated the rules would be arrested and fined, while their goods would be confiscated.
Meanwhile, the General Manager of Kwara State Environmental Protection Agency, Oba Sunday Joseph Adefila, had commended Gov. Abdulfatah Ahmed for extending the sensitisation period.
Adefila, the Oloreke of Oreke-Okegbo, said the benefit of the action was to reduce pressure on traders and safeguard the lives and properties of the people.
He appealed to residents to always cooperate with the state government for harmonious and peaceful co-existence.
