The Kwara State House of Assembly yesterday suspended the Member representing Malete-Ipaiye-Oloru Constituency, Alhaji IIiasu Ibrahim, for allegedly sending a message threatening his colleague representing IIorin South Constituency, Alhaji Yusuf Tanke.

Speaker of the House Rasaq Atunwa announced the suspension after the House adopted the report of its Committee on Ethics, Privileges and Judiciary which investigated the petition written by Hon. Tanke who alleged that the suspended lawmaker sent him a threatening message.

The House unanimously resolved that the lawmaker be suspended for three months while he would only be entitled to his monthly salary without any allowance, since he would not be performing any official function to merit such within the period.

The committee chaired by Hon. Kamaldeen Fagbemi (APC, Oke Ogun) also recommended that Hon. Ibrahim should tender a written apology to Hon. Saadu Yusuf Tanke for the false allegations within seven days of resumption from suspension.

This was the second time the lawmaker would be suspended from the house as he suffered similar fate in May, 2012 over allegation of financial mismanagement levelled against the speaker. 

Hon. Iliasu is the only Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) lawmaker in the house following the defection of the state members of the PDP to the All Progressives Congress (APC).
Speaking with Daily Trust, the lawmaker described his suspension as illegal explaining that the House lack constitutional powers to suspend him. 
He said he was suspended on trumped up charges for refusing to go along with them to the APC and join former Governor Bukola Saraki, saying he would consult his people after which he would take "appropriate action".
