Jonathan meets Tukur, other party chiefs
Amidst uncertainty over his fate, the national chairman of the Peoples Democractic Party (PDP), Alhaji Bamanga Tukur and other members of the National Working Committee (NWC) of the party met President Goodluck Jonathan on Monday night and agreed on far reaching steps to rebuild the party.
The meeting came at a time media reports indicated that the presidency was ready to ease the party chairman out of office.
In Abuja, on Tuesday, indications emerged that interested party chiefs had actually swung into action, seeking the blessing of the president to become the chairman of the party.
President Jonathan was, however, said to have summoned the party leaders for a meeting, which many in Abuja believed was a valedictory session for the party chairman.
The meeting reportedly commenced by 9.00 p.m with all members of NWC in attendance.
The Chief of Staff to the President, Chief Mike Oghiadomhe, was also said to be at the meeting.
The party chiefs went to the meeting with President Jonathan after the colloquium held by the party for Chief Solomon Lar on Monday afternoon.
The meeting at the State House was held just as select caucus leaders of the party in the South-West gather in Lagos today, to brainstorm on the state of the party, following the uproar that greeted the recent defection of five governors of the party into the All Progressives Congress (APC).
Reports from the meeting in Abuja indicated that President Jonathan received reports of steps being taken by the party to reposition its structures, following the recent defection of five governors.
Alhaji Tukur was reported to have briefed the president on the outcome of their meeting with the Senate caucus of the party, the progress of work by the Kano State caretaker committee, the planned appointments of caretaker commitees in Sokoto and Kwara states, as well as progress of work by the caretaker committee of the party in Zamfara State.
The party chairman was also reported to have briefed the president on contact groups reaching out to some deputy governors of the affected states, such as Adamawa and Sokoto.
The visit of the deputy governor of Sokoto State, Alhaji Muktar Shagari, to Tukur was also cited as part of the reasons for the announcement by the deputy governor that he would not be leaving the party.
Tukur was also quoted as telling the president that work was ongoing to meet the PDP caucus in the House of Representatives, as well as a meeting with the governors elected on the platform of the party.
Sources at the meeting told the Nigerians Tribune that the president urged the party leaders to fast track the rebuilding efforts, so as to heal the wound of recent crisis.
The source noted that President Jonathan also briefed the party leaders on the reconciliation meeting held with the aggrieved governors of the party, as well as suggestions of the governors' forum for rebuilding the party.
Tukur was said to have commended the president for hosting the aggrieved governors, while also stressing the need for party discipline and undisputed loyalty to the president.
The meeting was reported to have further agreed that the consultation with the Senate caucus should be extended to the House of Representatives caucus, the governors' forum and the party's Board of Trustees (BoT), with the objective of establishing a line of communication among all key organs of the party.
Nigerian Tribune also gathered that the president and the party leaders agreed that after the conclusion of the consultation and establishment of communication lines, the meeting of the party's National Executive Commitee (NEC) should be held early next year.
A party official at the meeting said "broadly, we agree to bring all stakeholders together and establish sustainable contact and dialogue among all critical sectors of the party."
Meanwhile, some leaders of PDP in the South West will meet today in Lagos, to brainstorm on the state of the party in the zone.
The meeting, scheduled to hold at the residence of a chieftain of the party from Ogun State, is expected to have in attendance some national officers of the party.
