Mixed Reactions Trail New PDP Members' Defection To APC In Kwara
The news of the defection of members of the new Peoples Democratic Party (nPDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Abuja yesterday was received with mixed feelings by the supporters of the APC in Kwara State.
The leadership of the factionalised APC in the state claimed that they were in the dark on what the political development portends for them.
LEADERSHIP gathered that men of the state police command mounted surveillance at the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP)'s secretariat in Ilorin to ensure security and prevent likely break down of law and order, as it was feared that some people from old PDP may invade the secretariat with intention to take over.
Investigations showed that some people at the PDP secretariat located along Nupe Road, GRA, Ilorin had pulled down the flag of PDP and covered the name of the party on its billboard, early in the morning, when they heard of the development.
However, the leadership of the party later directed some staff of the party's secretariat to replace the removed flags and clean the paint on the party's billboard.
Speaking with journalists, the state chairman of the PDP, Alhaji Isola Balogun-Fulani, said he and his people are still in PDP.
"We are still in PDP. We have not been told otherwise. We expect our leader to formally give us directive on the development in the party. You know, we cannot just do anything based on media report. So, we are still in PDP", he said.
Also speaking, the former chairman of Congress for Progressive Change (CPC) in the state, Alhaji Sulaiman Buhari, said issues at hand would be settled as they unfold.
"I think with the rumour here and there, I think all the actions so far indicate that they have finally joined the party and they are talking of merger. When they are talking of merger, at least everybody would be carried along in the state.
"So, they have to come and sit down with the stakeholders on the modality to harmonise the structure together. We don't have option since that is a national decision. Like I said, whether comfortable or not comfortable, as a party man, there is nothing I can do to that than to follow the directives of the national executive of the party. There is nothing we can do. I don't belong to any candidate, I am a party man".
