Cultism: 2 remanded over death of 4 members

Two persons, Taye Yusuf and Olatunji Jamiu both of Offa, Kwara State, who were said to have been arrested during a clash between two rivalry cults that led to the death of four members have been remanded at the Federal Medium Security Prison, Mandala Area, Ilorin.

The order to remand the accused was made by an Ilorin Magistrate Court before which they were arraigned on a two-count charge of criminal conspiracy and suspected members of secret cult, which contradict Sections 97 of Penal Code Law and ii(1)(2) of Secret Cult and Secret Society in Educational Institution (Prohibition), Law 2004.

Police arrested the accused on October 1 following a tip-off that two rivalry cults, Eiye and Aiye Secret Cult Confraternity were engaging themselves in a senseless war in which four suspected members have been killed from both side.

Upon the receiving of the information, the Kwara State Commissioner of Police dispatched a team of the Anti-Cultism Squad to Offa town and environ where the accused were arrested.

Police said that when Yusuf (first accused) was searched, a Nokia handset containing photograph of one of the dead cultist killed at Offa town recently and other photograph of dead persons suspected to be cultist.

Police said further that in the Nokia C2 handset of Jamiu (second accused) the emblem of the Buccaneer Secret Cult Confraternity was discovered.

Police First Information Report (FIR) on the matter stated that investigation conducted at the State CID, Ilorin, revealed that the accused are members of the dreaded Buccaneer Secret Cult.

The FIR added that investigation is ongoing with a view to gather more evidence with which to preferred more charges against the first accused in connection with the photograph of the dead cultists killed in Offa, which were found in his handset.

The prosecutor, Inspector Zach Funsho informed the court that investigation into the matter was still in progress. He also objected to the bail of the accused and urged the court to remand them in prison custody until the next adjourned date.

The trial magistrate, Mrs. M.B. Ahmed acceded to the submission of the prosecutor and ordered that the accused be remanded at the Federal Medium Security Prison, Mandala, Ilorin until October 25 when the case would come up for further mention.
