Today is Arafat
Over 1.3million muslim pilgrims from across the globe who are currently performing this year's hajj in Mecca, will this morning converge on the plain of Arafat to complete one of the essential rituals of hajj.
Arafat is the 9th day of Dhul-Hijjah, the last month in the lunar islamic calendar.
As the dawn set this morning, worshippers have started making their way from Mina to a nearby hillside to enable them participate in the rigorous exercise.
The Herald observes that some pilgrims who had arrived ahead of others, stood firmly on the hillside, offering supplication to repent for their sins.
According to records, it was from this site that Prophet Muhammed (SAW) delivered his famous farewell sermon in his final year in life.
It is also observed that the day is very significant to muslims the world over, for it exemplifies the day of resurrection when every man would stand before the creator to account for their stewardship on earth.
In an exclusive telephone interview with The Herald yesterday, a one-time commissioner in the National Hajj Commission of Nigeria, NAHCON, Professor Badmus ‘Lanre Yusuf, said the Arafat Day represents most important element of hajj rites.
He noted that the holy prophet foretold that if any pilgrim makes it to the plain of Arafat, that person has fulfilled the necessary component of the pilgrimage.
Speaking on the spiritual significance of today, the immediate-past Head of Department of Religions, University of Ilorin, noted that every pilgrim is to appear in the same white garment as well as with the same intention to move closer to Almighty Allah.
He said the hajj rites forbid race, colour and social stratification, adding that Allah will be proud of muslim pilgrims today.
He said, "Arafat day is very significant to muslims; it represents most important element of hajj rites. On that day, no race, colour or social stratification; and Allah would be proud of Muslims among other creatures like angels.
"While those in Mecca are doing their religious rites, it is recommended for muslims at home to observe fasting, recite Lailaha ila Allah meaning (No god except Allah) and Astagfirullah meaning (I seek forgiveness from Allah)".
