Teachers may embark on strike - NUT President

Date: 2012-04-18

Nigeria Union of Teachers is to embark on strike in states which have reneged on paying their teachers 27.5 per cent allowance, says the NUT President, Mr. Michael Olukoya.

According to him,  the agreement was made prior to the introduction of the N18,000 minimum wage, which was then honoured by state governments.

Speaking with journalists in Ilorin on Tuesday during a workshop, Olukoya regretted that while some states honoured the  27.5 per cent allowance agreement, others refused.

He warned that  NUT would be forced to down tools in the affected states if their governments did not commence payment. The workshop was titled, 'Trade union practice in a changing word'.

He also appealed to  Oyo, Ekiti, Ogun and Edo states to withdraw the alleged recognistion granted to Academic Staff Union of Secondary Schools.

According to him, ASUSS is not a labour organisation and should  not be given such a legal recognition by the governors.

Olukoya said, "We are appealing to governors twisting the rule, the decision and agreement to suit them to please pay the allowance so that the children of the poor in public schools could have quality access to public education."

Minister of Labour and Productivity, Chief Chukwuemeka Wogu,  urged the NUT to adopt a dialogue approach rather than confrontation when faced with industrial relations issues.

Wogu, who was represented by  the Kwara State Controller of Labour, Ministry of Labour and Productivity, Mr. Kolawole Babalola, at the event, commended the NUT for its civilised approach to issues.

He called on organisations and industrial unions to redouble their efforts through systematic educational training of their members.

Director-General, Michael Imoudu National Institute for Labour Studies, Ilorin, Dr. John Olanrewaju, said industrial harmony was imperative for national development.
