Arewa group canvasses renaming of Kwara varsity after Saraki
A group by the name, Arewa Nationalist Movement (ANM) has decried the comments credited to the 2011 governorship candidate of the Congress of Nigeria in Kwara State, Mohammad Dele Belgore (SAN) opposing the renaming of Kwara State University in honour of the late political icon, Olusola Saraki.
The group observed, aside the fear of breaching the country's Constitutional provisions, even Kwara state could be renamed after Saraki, noting that even with the impediment, the name Saraki still remains synonymous to Kwara State.
In a statement issued yesterday in Abuja, the national Secretary of the movement, Chief Iorember Aker said "One wonders if Belgore's opposition to the renaming of Kwara State after Saraki is a true demonstration of his ignorance to historical facts or a deliberate attempt to thwart the well articulated legacies of the founding father of Kwara State, Olusola Saraki"
He continued that "it is absolutely disheartening to note that some enlightened and civilized Nigerians who should ordinarily be the guiding light of society, rather take advantage of their position to mislead some ignorant populace"
Aker added that if University of Ife could be named after the late Obafemi Awolowo who was the Premier of Western Region under the Action Group as his party and Anambara State University could be renamed, as Nnamdi Azikiwe University after the Late Zik of Africa, who was the founder of NCNC , there is nothing wrong in renaming Kwara state University after Saraki.
