Nigeria designates 13 airports for perishable cargo

Date: 2013-06-20

The designation of the airports for cargo operation is to help transform the aviation industry into a major revenue earner.

Nigerian aviation authorities have said that 13 airports have been designated as perishable cargo airports.

The Coordinating General Manager, Aviation parastatals, of the Nigeria Aviation industry, Yakubu Datti, said this in a statement on Tuesday. He said the airports include Abuja, Akure, Calabar, Ilorin, Jalingo, Jos, Kano, Lagos, Makurdi,Minna, Owerri, Port Harcourt and Uyo airports.

The designation of these airports as perishable cargo airports are expected to help transform the aviation industry into the country’s major revenue earner.

Mr. Datti said that the airports were chosen due to their proximity to areas where foods are produced.

He also stated that state governments have been encouraged to partner with the Federal Government to revive smaller airports for regional and domestic revenue generation through tourism, taxi operations, and cargo operations; as well as getting involved in the over N250 billion annual air freight export market out of Africa.

Mr. Datti said the sector is establishing a relationship with the agriculture ministry and state governments to create storage infrastructure which will step up evacuation of agricultural products to domestic market.

“The Nigerian aviation sector is establishing closer co-operation with Federal Ministry of Agriculture and State Governments for concerted and strategic focus to this efforts. The strategy is therefore to create the much needed storage infrastructure in view of the large volume involved and to facilitate the evacuation of agricultural produce to domestic markets, in conformity with international standards,” Mr. Datti said
